08 – Buck Rogers in the 25th Century!

Join Scott & Tom as they break down this week’s pilot: Buck Rogers in the 25th Century!

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century is an American science fiction adventure television series produced by Universal Studios. The series ran for two seasons between 1979–1981, and the feature-length pilot episode for the series was released as a theatrical film several months before the series aired. The film and series were developed by Glen A. Larson, based upon the character Buck Rogers created in 1928 by Philip Francis Nowlan that had previously been featured in comic strips, novellas, a serial film, and on television and radio.

  1. I had a serious crush on Wilma Deering (Erin Gray) as a Sophmore in High School in ’79. I remember using my cheap Radio Shack tape recorder to record the episodes so I could listen to them over and over. This was long before I had a VCR and was the only way to keep the SF vibe going daily. I had Battle Star Galactica tapes and the records of the Star Wars sound track and a record of the Star Wars Story. Life was analog and good!

  2. In the 2nd episode of the main series (which I think is the second half of the feature length pilot) there is a character called Brigadier Gordon.
He is played by Larry ‘Buster’ Crabbe who created the roles of both Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon in the Republic serials.

  3. I enjoyed Buck Rodgers when I was a kid, but looking back, it was shyte. It started out on water skis, then jumped the shark shortly after that. (Hawkman? Short Aliens wanting to have sex with Wilma? etc).

The closing song was a beautiful piece of music, that’s why it was so catchy. Listen to it at the end of the second episode, where they got rid of the horrible “singing”. It’s like the M*A*S*H theme: better without words.

  4. You could cast Baldwin as Hawk, maybe not put that ridiculious make up on. Instead, make it battle armor.

  5. Back in the eighties when I was in College, I had a friend who was in charge of student programming for the university I attended and one of his jobs was booking lecturers to come give talks to the students. One of the guests was Mel Blanc. My friend had to go pick him up from the airport in New Orleans and then drive them to the university. When they arrived, they were hungry and they stopped at the drive thru at McDonalds. My friend said that he never laughed so hard as having Mel Blanc order McDonalds in the voice of Daffy Duck. I went to that lecture that evening and it was a great lecture.

  6. Col. Wilma Deering. Looks like a blond Princess Lea, sounds like Eve Arden. I didn’t know if I was watching Episode 4 or listening to an old episode of “My Friend Irma”…

  7. Would have been funnier if I got the radio show right, try “Our Miss Brooks”…
